Tape as idents, what could possibly go wrong.
All replaced by two wires now.
All that wiring, and just as I finished it... "I know, let's go DCC." Well, ok, I never painted the track diagram. The old controller was great, I wish I'd had something like that back in the OO days. It really worked like it says on the tin. This went off to a very excited new home.
